I wish I had more closeups to show just how bad of shape the wood is in. You can see the varnish was flaking off and so was the walnut veneer underneath it. I'd love to find some original photos to see what the color was starting out. I can see some of the leather appears to be spray painted black. The tan appears to be new since the air vents have some poor stitching.
Wood trim after
I stripped and added new curly maple veneer to the dash, glove box, and door strips. Material was from https://www.veneersupplies.com/. I used some veneer softener and then wood glue to adhere them. I'm happy with the way they turned out, the maple catches the light which is partially visible in the pictures. I need to figure out a handle for the glove box. I'm not really happy with the gloss level. I just bought some tripple thick glaze and plan to try coating them with this.
I know the light wood and the tan dash isn't a great combination but I plan to reupholster the interior. I'm looking at a dark charcoal for the dash and center console. I'd like to do the seats a lighter grey with red stitching to match the body color. I started thinking it was sacrilege to change from the factory colors but I've decided if I'm going to invest the blood, sweat, and tears then I'm going to make it something I like.
Things to do next (after mechanical work)
Upholster dash
Upholster center console
Carpets
Car seats
Repair switches and and gauges
If anyone has ideas for color schemes I'm happy to hear them or see photos
This is the color and maybe material for the dash
